Martin Place Metro – Sydney, Australia

Martin Place Metro

Sydney, Australia

About the Project

Martin Place Metro Station is one of the cornerstone stations of the new Sydney Metro Line; servicing an average of 18,900 customers each weekday. The first fully integrated station development in Australia, the station boasts more than five levels of retail, hospitality and services. The station also provides end-of-trip facilities, with parking for 1200 bicycles, encouraging active transport in the City.

Challenge

The Martin Place Metro Station project presented a unique set of challenges due to its scale and prominence.

The station being situated over 25m underground presented some intense mechanical requirements to ensure that sufficient cooling and airflow was available for the project’s state-of-the-art equipment. A superior air flow rate, high face velocity and maximum overall pressure drop were going to be integral to the station’s ability to function deep underground.

The ventilation solution for the station had to be more than just functional; it had to aesthetically integrate with the design of the project’s façade and function with complete storm resistance. Each factor was integral to the durability and longevity of the project.

Solution

Construction Specialties Australia was selected to provide our RSH-5700 storm-resistant horizontal blade louvres. These louvres were the obvious choice, easily surpassing the rigorous ventilation requirements for the project. With 45.8% free area and a Class A effectiveness rating at 47kph windspeed and 7.5cm rainfall rate, the RSH-5700 performs well beyond the minimum requirements needed, ensuring the station was perfectly equipped to provide adequate ventilation to its subterranean platforms and equipment.

The RSH-5700 louvres not only met the functionality requirements, they also enhanced the longevity and visual appeal of the station. The horizontal blades of these louvres seamlessly blend in with the horizontal screening system of the building façade while simultaneously providing resistance from up to 100% of wind-driven rain.
